Six GYA working groups have collaborated on the GYA Statement “Young researchers and scholars’ proposals for action for a sustainable present and future” unveiled at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan. The various working groups that contributed to the Statement include the following: Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction; The GYA and the UN SDGs: Women in Science; Science Education for Youth; Scientific Excellence; and Open Science.
GYA alumnus Renard Siew (Centre for Governance and Political Studies, Malaysia) introduced the Statement during the “Climate Science: key take aways in 2024” event co-organized by the International Science Council (ISC) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) on 12 November 2024.
Renard commented: “The facts are clear—climate impacts are escalating faster than anticipated, and we’re running out of time to make meaningful progress. We need to integrate climate science to where it matters.”
The authors of this Statement call on decision-makers and policy-makers to take actions to help mitigate the impacts of climate change, including accelerating the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, adapting new technologies, and enhancing a financial framework to mitigate and adapt to climate change effects, among others.
