Global State of Young Scientists (GloSYS) Project
The Global Young Academy (GYA) was founded in 2010 with the vision to give a voice to young scientists around the world. The GYA empowers early-career researchers to lead international and interdisciplinary initiatives and projects, and to engage in intergenerational dialogue by developing and mobilising talent from six continents. The academy is hosted by the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
A strategic project of the GYA is the Global State of Young Scientists (GloSYS) research project, which is currently in early stage of development in a number of countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. GloSYS Latin America and the Caribbean (GloSYS LAC) is an empirical research project which relies on the collection and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data for the purpose of advancing our understanding of the working conditions, funding environment, and challenges affecting young scholars in Latin America and the Caribbean. A central aim of the GloSYS studies is to collect internationally-comparable data on early-career researchers in all regions of the world.
Start date: 1 August 2020 / as soon as possible
Duration: initially until 31 December 2020, but we aim for prolongation in a continuing research project (depending on funding)
Location: German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, Halle (Saale), Germany
The research assistant will work under the supervision of the GloSYS Project Researcher, to assist with organizational and logistical tasks, as well as with overall project management. This position provides a unique opportunity to be part of a highly interdisciplinary and international research team, and to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and rewards that come with conducting empirical research at this scale. We are seeking someone with interests and some prior knowledge in areas such as data management and basic data analysis, outreach, writing up study results, etc. We are looking for a highly motivated and well-organized social scientist with good Spanish and English language skills. Additional Portuguese and/or French language skills are an advantage.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Assist GloSYS project researcher in the conceptualization and management of the study
- Search, review and help analyze indicator data and literature
- Take on organizational or logistical tasks, such as helping to plan meetings
- Keep track of collection and standardization of data collected by individual research team members
- Assist with communication-related tasks such sending updates to the team, outreach, and the expansion of GloSYS’ social media presence
- Bachelor degree in social sciences
- Very good written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish
- Very strong organizational skills
- Intercultural sensitivity
- Ability to work collaboratively but also independently once given direction
- Eagerness to learn
The payment will be depending on the qualification of the applicant, up to level 9a of the German Public Service Tarrif (TVöD Bund).
The contract is a part-time arrangement between 20 and 30 hrs a week (depending on the availability of the applicant).
