Open Science First Fridays 7 November

The GYA’s Open Science group is organizing Open Science First Fridays – a series of discussions on current topics impacting Open Science. This month’s event on 7 November at 14:00 UTC is titled “Can we redefine publishing beyond the article and beyond the APC?”, featuring featuring Veronique Kiermer,  Chief Scientific Officer of PLOS. Open Science First Fridays is open to the public, and free to attend.

Webinar: Early-Career Researchers’ Challenges and Pathways of Resilience

Join us on 10 Nov. as The Institute of Balkan Studies & Centre of Thracology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the GYA host the webinar “Not Just Another Statistic: Early-Career Researchers’ Challenges and Pathways of Resilience”. The webinar will be held online 10 November from 13:00 -14:00 UTC and will feature GYA Excecutive Committee member Reem Abou Assi (Al-Qabas College, Iraq) and GYA member Alexandra Milanova (Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Bulgaria). Pre-registration is required. Register using the QR code or with this link. The event is part of the initiative of the International Science Council to mark the World Science Day for Peace and Development.

YA of Europe Inquiry Lecture series on AI

At its Annual General Meeting and conference in October 2025, the Young Academy of Europe kicked off a new lecture series on AI. The “Inquiry Lecture series” will continue with a webinar on 12 November 2025 (12:00-13.30 UTC). See here for details on the upcoming webinar.

Young scientists, global challenges, and the power of collaboration

Executive Committee member Natisha Dukhi (Human Sciences Research Council, South Africa) participated in the Science 20 (S20) Young Scientists Meeting, representing the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS) and the GYA. The gathering brought together early- and mid-career researchers from across the globe to reflect on three themes that touch all our lives: climate change, well-being, and social transformation.

YA Ireland report on supporting scholars from conflict zones

The Young Academy Ireland, together with the Royal Irish Academy, have published a report on “Science in Conflict Zones”, which spotlights the urgent need for coordinated academic support for scholars affected by war and displacement. Read more here.

UK Young Academy to represent early-career voices on human rights committee

The UK Young Academy has been invited to provide early-career perspectives through three of its members on the UK and Ireland Human Rights Committee. This collaborative initiative is led by the UK’s seven national academies to defend academic freedom and the human rights of scholars worldwide. Learn more about their involvement on their website.

Leadership changes at Young Academies

The Young Academy Finland has elected a new board, with Samuli Autti as chair and Sanna Selinheimo as vice chair.The Young Academy of Europe have elected a new Board for the 2025/26 period, with Anna Kuppuswamy taking over as Chair from now-outgoing Chair Scott Bremer.
