This GYA Incubator group was set up in January 2024.
The group aims to address the need to understand Africa’s diverse scientific landscape, to bridge the North-South and South-South scientific gap and foster intra-African collaboration, while establishing and strengthening the science-policy interface across the continent.
The group will contribute to a transformative shift in Africa’s role in global science to a dynamic and innovative role. This will be achieved through increased collaboration within the continent, strengthening science policy and facilitating international scientific partnerships. The aims are to:

The incubator group will be related to the GYA’s strategic priorities and therefore will:
– foster interdisciplinary collaboration by bringing together scientists, diplomats, and policymakers to address complex challenges.
– will empower young African scientists and diplomats on science diplomacy
– offer training and mentorship programs, directly contributing to capacity building in science diplomacy.
– help members to engage in science-diplomacy dialogues and science policy.
– help and encourage collaborations between African scientists
– enable to build global engagement by fostering collaborations not only within Africa but also with international stakeholders, which resonates with GYA’s global outlook
– could attract funding from partners or organizations interested in African scientific development.
In August 2024, group members in collaboration with the GYA Membership Selection Committee, organized an online session to share information about the GYA’s currently-open call for membership and answer any questions about the GYA and its activities, as well as queries about the application process that applicants might have. More than 40 early- and mid-career researchers (mostly from African countries) joined the session.
In August 2024, group members served as GIYSCC-2024 Indigenous Youth Leaders for Region 2 (Africa, Europe and Arctic) at the Global Indigenous Youth Summit on Climate Change (GIYSCC). The Summit was organised on the occasion of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on 9 August. You can see a recording of this event here: GIYSCC-2024 YouTube.
