The GYA and INYAS release Position Statement from the 2025 International Conference of Young Scientists

In June 2025, together with the meeting’s hosts, the Indian National Young Academy of Science (INYAS), the GYA held an International Conference of Young Scientists on the topic “Confluence of Visionaries: Empowering Science for Global Change”. The resulting joint Position Statement underscores the commitment of the GYA and INYAS to foster shared scientific knowledge and technological progress.

Sixth GYA professional development workshop for at-risk scholars

The GYA held the 6th professional development workshop for at-risk scholars, in cooperation with the UK Young Academy, the Young Academy of Scotland, and the Council for At-Risk Academics (Cara). The workshop was hosted at Wolfson College, University of Oxford, made possible by an anonymous grant to Wolfson College, and by the time and efforts of contributing speakers and partner organizations.

Young scientists, global challenges, and the power of collaboration

Executive Committee member Natisha Dukhi (Human Sciences Research Council, South Africa) participated in the Science 20 (S20) Young Scientists Meeting, representing the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS) and the GYA. The gathering brought together early- and mid-career researchers from across the globe to reflect on three themes that touch all our lives: climate change, well-being, and social transformation.

Academic Writing Introductory Workshop
The South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS), in partnership with the Young Scientists Network Malaysia, will organise an “Academic Writing Introductory Workshop“ on 2 October 2025, from 07:00-09:00 UTC. The workshop aims to equip participants with essential academic writing skills, focusing on research proposals and effective writing techniques. Participants will also engage in interactive activities to assess writing quality, refining their editing and revision strategies.

The Letten Prize Day 2025 celebrations
The Young Academy of Norway and the Letten Foundation awarded the 2025 Letten Prize to Professor Danielle Wood from MIT, for her outstanding work using space technology to create meaningful change for people on Earth.

Young Academy Ireland Evidence for Policy Summit
In September 2025, the Young Academy Ireland organised the “Young Academy Ireland Evidence for Policy Summit”, connecting early-to-mid career researchers and policymakers. The event looked at the persistent challenge for EMCRs of translating evidence into policy, various routes towards impact, and ways of collaboration between researchers and policymakers, and provided practical examples of how EMCRs can produce evidence that informs policy across a diverse range of areas. Read a short report here.

YA of Sweden input to the Nordic Council of Ministers for Education and Research
In August 2025, the Young Academy of Sweden provided input to the Nordic Council of Ministers for Education, Research and Language’s new cooperation programme that is valid until 2030, as well as to a work plan that is valid until 2027. Their contribution focused on issues of academic freedom, long-term funding conditions and researchers’ ability to conduct free, curiosity-driven research. They also commented on the goals of the work plan, which deals with access to education, research quality, society’s competence needs and strategic areas, as well as the Nordic region as an integrated research and education region.

First member cohort for new Pakistan Young Academy
The Pakistan Young Academy, established in late 2024, have announced their first cohort of 17 members. GYA members Wasim Sajid (Vice President), Hussain Mustatab Wahedi (General Secretary) and Muhammad Qasim (President) continue their roles as part of the founding team and first leadership group of the academy.

Leadership changes at Young Academies
The Philippine Association of Young Scientists has a new President: Rio John Ducusin has taken over from Allan Soriano, who filled this role from 2023-2025.
The Nigerian Young Academy has a new President: Temitope Onuminya has taken over as the academy’s 8th President from Chukwunonso Peter Okoli, who filled this role from 2023-2025.
The Swiss Young Academy have recently elected a new Executive Board, with the Speaker role now filled by Nawal Kinany.

New advisers for Young Academies
In September 2025, the new Council of the German Junge Akademie began its three-year term to advise academy members and the Board and to help build the network of the academy. Former members of the academy are also regularly involved in the Council.
The Swiss Young Academy have also established a Sounding Board as a new advisory body to specifically strengthen the evaluation and implementation of the academy’s members’ joint projects. The election of the first four Sounding Board members by the Board of Directors of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences represents another important step in the further development of the Young Academy, five years after its foundation.
