Since joining the Global Young Academy (GYA), my experience has been a testament to the profound impact that membership in this vibrant community can have on a young scientist’s career.
Let me stress that this article about some of the activities I have been engaged in, is not about self-promotion. Rather, it’s a reflection on how the GYA has provided me with invaluable opportunities to contribute and collaborate on a global scale, to put my skills into new contexts, and how others can also harness these opportunities.
Strategic Initiatives and Collaborative Projects
One of the most impactful aspects of my journey with the GYA has been my involvement in strategic projects and working groups. Co-leading the Global State of Young Scientists in Latin America and the Caribbean (GloSYS-LAC) project since 2021 has offered a platform to address critical issues in my region of origin. Furthermore, founding and co-leading the Science Diplomacy in the Americas working group has enabled me to explore the intersection of science and diplomacy, fostering international cooperation. These are also examples of how a diaspora scientist (like me) can continue to contribute to their country or continent of origin.
Mentorship and Networking
The GYA is a global group of young scientists passionate about making a difference. I had the privilege to be a mentor in the At-risk Scholars Initiative, and also to support new members when they start their memberships. At the same time, I have benefited from the expertise and support of many members, even from other disciplines, who are just a message away and have provided valuable advice and feedback when needed. The way our group dynamics work fosters meaningful relationships that transcend borders and disciplines.
Engaging on the World Stage
My GYA membership has opened doors to international platforms where I’ve had the honor of representing young scientists. Being at the Summit of the Americas in 2022 and the UN High Level Political Forum in 2023 allowed me to connect with great minds worldwide and to learn to dialogue with individuals in politics and policymaking. Moreover, speaking at the World Science Forum in Cape Town (2022) and various other events showcased the importance of young voices in shaping the global scientific discourse.
Contributing to Knowledge and Policy
One of the GYA’s core strengths is its commitment to producing impactful knowledge and advice. Collaborating on joint science advice statements with esteemed institutions such as the US National Academies and G7 Science academies has enabled me to contribute to critical global discussions, including those on the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, my senior authorship in publications stemming from GYA initiatives underscores our commitment to addressing challenges faced by early-career researchers (ECRs). By harnessing the diverse expertise and passion of GYA members, we drive positive change and influence policy decisions that shape the future of science.
Empowerment through Collective Action
Leading in the First Science Leadership Latin American and the Caribbean Program and organizing sessions at international conferences have shown me the power of collective action, and the importance to bring diverse voices to scientific conversations worldwide. Amplifying the voices of others makes waves, propagating the message that scientists do want to contribute. Giving a voice to other peers worldwide can reach further than our members alone.
A Humble Reminder
Again, my intention in recounting these experiences is not to boast, but rather to emphasize the incredible potential that GYA membership holds.
It’s about leveraging the available GYA working groups, programs and platforms to amplify your impact, contribute to global science, and ultimately shape a better world. The GYA is a community that nurtures collaboration, mentorship, and advocacy for the future of science and society.
Closing Thoughts
In my journey with the GYA, I have grown both personally and professionally. Through leadership, mentorship, advocacy, and collaboration, I can say that being part of the GYA is an opportunity to inspire change, learn from peers, and create a lasting impact on the global scientific landscape. When my membership ends (it is five years only, so younger generations can continue leading), I plan to keep supporting the amazing activities we have created with my colleagues and friends, and more to come.
I encourage all ECRs and scientists worldwide to explore the GYA, not just for personal gain (which is a lot already!), but to join hands in shaping a better future through the power of collective action.
