‘New Perspectives on Open Science’, an international workshop on Open Science convened by GYA Co-Chair Moritz Riede (UK) and GYA Open Science Working Group co-lead Koen Vermeir (France) was held on 20 March 2018 in Oxford (UK).
The workshop was co-organised by the GYA and Maison Française d’Oxford.
Theme: Open Science is currently undergoing major changes. From an activist movement promoting the open sharing of scientific results it has transformed into the dominant framework in European science policy. On the way, implementation is increasingly recognised to require diverse practices, institutions and infrastructures, and Open Science has become more complex and ambiguous. In this workshop, we discussed the new identities of Open Science and the new challenges the movement is facing. We evaluated whether old strategies and ideas were still effective and relevant and explored areas of Open Science that have largely remained off the radar.
To close the workshop, we put the spotlight on one of these forgotten pillars of Open Science, the fair access to research software, in particular in low and middle income countries, and a new GYA report on ‘Global Access to Research Software: The Forgotten Pillar of Open Science Implementation‘ was launched.
