As a member of the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), the GYA nominated several of its members to IAP leadership and committee positions. Following an online election in summer 2022, IAP member academies elected the 2022-2024 Governance and at their recent General Assembly in Arizona, USA, successful candidates were announced.
For the first time, the GYA will be represented in IAP leadership. Karen Cloete (University of South Africa) will be serving in the IAP Advisory Committee for the next two years. The Advisory Committee is responsible for synthesizing recommendations from the Development and Programme Committees and advising the IAP Board.
GYA member Goran Bandov (University of Zagreb, Croatia) and alumna Karly S. Kehoe (Saint Mary’s University, Canada), nominated by the Royal Society of Canada, will be part of the IAP’s Development and Programme Committee on Policy Advice. The role of the Development and Programme Committees is to assist the Co-Chairs in developing and securing funding for IAP programmes and activities.
GYA member Encieh Erfani (Iran) will serve in the IAP Development and Programme Committee on Communication, Education and Outreach. Also on this committee is GYA founding member Jorge Huete-Perez (Universidad Centroamericana), nominated by the Nicaraguan Academy of Sciences.

In 2019, the GYA became a full member of the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), a global network of 138 academies of science, engineering and medicine. The IAP is a vital part of the global science landscape, and strives to ensure that science serves society inclusively and equitably. IAP support for the GYA and National Young Academies goes back well beyond the founding of the GYA in 2010, to IAP’s support for young scientists at the “Summer Davos” meetings of the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of New Champions in 2008 and 2009.
The InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) provides a collective, supportive mechanism for academies to further strengthen their crucial roles as providers of evidence-based policy and advice. As a unified voice of academies, IAP aims to amplify academies’ impact at the international level. For instance, IAP produces evidence-based statements and reports examining major priorities for sustainable development, and provides independent and authoritative advice to national governments and inter-governmental organizations, including the United Nations (UN), on critical science-based issues.
