The GYA is happy to welcome the Rwanda Young Academy of Science to the family of Young Academies the world over!
The RYAS aims to contribute solutions to challenges facing society at a national and global scale; provide a platform for young scientists to influence policy decisions; contribute towards the development of scientific capacity in Rwanda through mentoring and role-modeling of future scientists; and foster opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations amongst young scientists.
The academy started its work in 2019, by the initiative of the young scientists who saw the role of science and technology in a country’s development and found it crucial to have the input from early-career researchers. In the past, the RYAS has partnered with local organizations to organize workshops on science communication & scientific writing, for the benefit of graduate students and early-career researchers.
The RYAS was officially established in 2022, and will now continue to extend their outreach portfolio to include mentorship activities targeting undergraduates students. As part of their science research excellence portfolio, they plan to hold a series of planning meetings to identify pressing issues in the community and form working groups to tackle the challenges selected as RYAS’s short-term research focus.
RYAS works in collaboration with the Rwanda Academy of Science (RAS), the Global Young Academy (GYA), and other science and technology institutions on national and international level, to accomplish its mission.
The first call for new members will be launched in early 2023. All steps – nominations, review and selection – shall be completed by May 2023 and new members shall be announced in time to participate in the International Conference of Young Scientists, scheduled for 5-9 June 2023 in Kigali, Rwanda.
