Biography
Yusuf Baran is a Professor at Abdullah Gul University, Faculty of Life and Natural Sciences. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in 2002 and 2006, respectively, at Middle East Technical University, Department of Biological Sciences. During his Ph.D. studies, he earned NATO scholarship to work in Medical University of South Carolina of the United States of America, Hollings Cancer Center, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. From June 2007 to 2015, he worked at İzmir Institute of Technology, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics. He has been involved in more than 20 national and international research projects. Two of the projects were supported by the European Union Community. He is also an active referee for 35 scientific journals and serving on the Editorial Board of four several academic journals. He is also an active member of many academic and professional institutions including European Hematology Association, European Association for Cancer Research, Turkish Academy of Sciences-Cancer Research Group, Turkish Society of Hematology, Turkish Society of Biochemistry, Society of Molecular Cancer Research, Society of Oncology, Society of Regenerative Medicine and Cellular Therapy, Society of Cell Death Research and Turkish Society of Experimental Hematology (Member of Executive Council). Dr. Yusuf Baran is an Executive Committee Member for The Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (Country’s main funding body for R&D) since 2011. He is also an Executive Committee Member of Global Young Academy since 2014. He has more than eighty scientific awards. Selected ones are “2014 Outstanding Achievement Award” by Fevzi Akkaya Scientific Activities Support Programme, “Outstanding Young Scientist Award” by Science Heros Association, “Outstanding Labor Scientist Award” by Experimental Hematology Association, “2013 Young Scientist Award” by the World Economic Forum in 2013, “Outstanding Young Person of Turkey in Scientific Leadership”, by International Young Leaders and Enterpreneurs in 2013, “Outstanding Young Scientist Award” by Turkish Academy of Sciences in 2010, “Science Encouragement Award” by Kocaeli University in 2011, and “Cancer Researcher of the Year Award” by Society of Molecular Cancer Research in 2012. In his research, Dr. Baran focuses on molecular biology of cancer, molecular hematology, multidrug resistance mechanisms, reversal of resistance, stem cells and their regenerative potentials, and science and technology policies.
