In October 2018, the University of Belgrade in Serbia served as host to a GYA Young Scientist Ambassador Programme (YSAP) mission, where GYA member Thomas Edison dela Cruz, a professor of microbiology at the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines, met with young scientists and professors.
During this outreach mission, Thomas delivered a lecture on the macrofungi of the Philippines and their traditional uses and applications in food and drug discovery, and introduced GYA to 26 graduate students and 7 members of the faculty. He also visited the research laboratories at the Faculty of Agriculture and discussed the possibility of future research collaboration and academic visits.
A key outcome of the outreach mission is the renewed interest of the senior professors to help establish a network or academy for young scientists in Serbia.
