Workshop on the U.S. National Climate Assessment to Empower Communities
The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, and the NASEM New Voices in Sciences, Engineering and Medicine are organising a workshop on leveraging the National Climate Assessment (NCA) to empower communities on 9 October 2024, from 13:00-22:00 UTC. The goal for this workshop is to contribute towards the ongoing efforts to broaden the reach of the NCA, with a focus on community engagement to enhance the impact and application of the report findings at local and regional levels. The workshop will explore best practices and opportunities for community engagement at various stages of the NCA development as well as dissemination process. Workshop participants will also share tangible examples of how the findings of the NCA are effectively being communicated and applied at local levels to benefit climate vulnerable communities. Debate for and against AI in research
In September, GYA member Sibel Eker (Austria/Netherlands) was a speaker at the online “IIASA Connect Coffee Talk Debate: For and Against AI in Research”. Organised by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and the European Commission’s Science Advice Mechanism, the speakers were assigned a “for” or “against” position on AI in research, challenging them to dive into either the benefits or challenges that AI brings to scientific practice. Further speakers included Adel Daoud from the Young Academy of Sweden and Fatemeh Golpayegani from the Young Academy of Ireland.
5th GYA professional development workshop for at-risk scholars
The GYA’s At-Risk Scholars Initiative, in cooperation with the Young Academy of Scotland, the Council for At-Risk Academics (Cara), and the UK Young Academy, held the fifth professional development workshop for at-risk scholars in September at Wolfson College, University of Oxford. Inclusive Leadership for Women in Science resources available
A two-part online workshop “Inclusive Leadership for Women in Science” was held earlier this month, organized by the GYA Women in Science working group, and designed in partnership with the facilitation team at Inclusive Innovation. Altogether over 70 participants benefited from the interactive sessions which explored several methods and tools to help young scientists make informed decisions related to career challenges they face. Workshop descriptions, as well as recordings and resources, are available here.

Global State of Young Scientists (GloSYS) Africa Main Report published
The Global State of Young Scientist (GloSYS) Africa Main Report provides a comprehensive analysis of the experiences and challenges faced by early-career researchers (ECRs) in Africa, with an aim to advise policy for science, and contribute to scholarly discussions in the field of higher education research. The GloSYS Africa Main Report analyses survey responses from ECRs born in 42 of the 54 African nations, as well as African nationals living outside of Africa. Additionally, survey respondents in 14 pre-selected focus countries were interviewed. Read more about the report, and download it here.
Website and teaching materials on Trust in Science
Former GYA Advisory Board member Bruce Alberts and colleagues have completed a major update of their website on “Why trust Science?”. The website is intended to serve as a repository for material to help the teaching of trust in science and acquaint students with understanding of the scientific method and of how the science community creates reliable knowledge. The authors contend that in an age of constant misinformation, science education must change and must include the explicit teaching of knowledge production, beginning in middle school and extending through college. To encourage such teaching, the website contains a brief essay on Why Trust Science?, as well as links to free, high-quality teaching tools and other resources for teachers or science education and outreach practitioners.
