2025 Letten Prize call for applications
Are you a young researcher working within the fields of health, development or environment in any aspect of human life? Then apply to the Letten Prize, which is open to researchers under the age 45 from all corners of the world. The Letten Prize is a collaboration between the Letten Foundation and The Young Academy of Norway. The prize of 2.5 million NOK (ca. 235,000 USD) is awarded biannually. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed, and the winner will be awarded the prize at a ceremony taking place in Oslo, Norway, in September 2025. World Health Summit 2024 roundup; GYA member selected for IAP Young Physician Leadership Programme
The GYA was represented at the World Health Summit 2024 (WHS) in Berlin, Germany, by GYA member Thao Thi Phuong Nguyen (Hanoi Medical University, Vietnam), and alumni Isil Kurnaz (Gebze Technical University, Turkey) and Stefan Kohler (Heidelberg University, Germany). Additionally, Thao was honored as one of 24 physicians selected to take part in the IAP 2024 Young Physician Leaders (YPL) programme. Read more about the World Health Summit 2024.
Launch of ISC project for EMCRs
The ISC has recently launched a new project on “Empowering and Elevating the Voice of Early- and Mid-Career Researchers in International Science and Global Policy Processes”. This two-year project is supported by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), an ISC member organization. The project aims to provide opportunities for EMCRs to attend global science events, participate in capacity-building modules, and to create and support platforms for young researchers to engage in international scientific exchanges. The project has a special focus on Early- and Mid-Career Researchers from low- and middle-income countries. Read more about the project here.
Meeting of Young Academies from Asia
The Indian National Young Academy of Science (INYAS) celebrated its 10th anniversary at its mid-year meeting in September 2024. As part of this three-day meeting, the Young Academies from Asia also met during a hybrid networking session on the “Role of Neighbouring National Young Academies to Build Scientific Temperament among Asian Countries”, which brought together representatives from various national young academies, the GYA, and the ISC. Scottish Young Academy’s parliamentary pairing scheme
The Young Academy of Scotland (YAS) has launched the third round of its YAS-MSP Pairing Scheme, bringing together policymakers from the Scottish Parliament and young professionals to build bridges for evidence-based policy collaboration. Read more about this scheme here.
YA Germany publishes science communication guidelines
The German Young Academy’s research group on Engaged Science have produced a booklet on “Communicating Science: Guidelines from the Junge Akademie” (in German), containing guidelines and practical advice on science communication for scientists. The booklet discusses 5 key guidelines for effective communication and addresses questions of how to deal with phenomena such as “false balance”, false statements by colleagues, or”fake news”, or how to communicate a lack of information,uncertainties and limitations of scientific findings and contradictory points of view.
Meeting of the regional young academies in Germany
In early October, the German Young Academy hosted a meeting of regional young academies from all over Germany at the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in Halle/Saale, Germany. Participants discussed aspects of abuses of power within the science system, as well as guidelines and recommendations for science communication.
Navigating early-stage STEM Careers
In September 2024, members of the US New Voices in Science,Engineering and Medicine participated in a session on “Perspectives from New Voices: Navigating Early-stage STEM Careers Across Sectors”, hosted by the.U.S. Board on Higher Education and Workforce. T e session focused on how experiences as graduate students and post-docs aid in the transition to careers in STEM and on shared lessons learned on how to prepare for the transition. The session was one of two conversations with US New Voices members intended to provide deeper insight into current hurdles that graduate students and postdocs face to prepare for and land into their own successful career.
