2024 European Young Academies meeting
Young Academies from all over Europe met in Berlin, Germany, in May 2024. The meeting, organized and hosted by the German Junge Akademie, and co-hosted by the GYA, brought together representatives from 22 Young Academies and 2 Young Academy initiatives, and again was the largest ever ENYA meeting to date (photo: Bernd Brundert for the Junge Akademie).

2024 Nordic-Baltic Meeting of Young Academies
In April 2024, the Young Academy in Denmark hosted the Nordic-Baltic Meeting of Young Academies, which brought together the Young Academies from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia. Details are available here.
Winner of the 2024 YAE André Mischke Prize
The Young Academy of Europe have announced the winner of their André Mischke YAE Prize 2024 for Science and Policy. The winner is Professor Jacek Kolanowski, who is the Immediate Past Chair of the Polish Young Academy and Immediate Past President of the Board of YASAS, the Young Academies Science Advice Structure in Europe. Young Academy Finland organizes “Meet a Researcher” service
The Young Academy of Finland’s Meet a Researcher service has recently received confirmation of additional three-year funding support from the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. This funding will continue to support the growth and development of the Meet a Researcher service, which is a science education programme that provides remote visits from researchers to schools from elementary school to high school. German Junge Akademie and Israel Young Academy hold AcadeMix event
The German Junge Akademie in collaboration with the Israel Young Academy held a three-day AcadeMix seminar which aimed at fostering inter- and multidisciplinary collaborations among scholars, as well as scientific exchange between members of Young Academies. Read more here.
German Junge Akademie selects new Board
In June 2024, the new Board Members of the German Junge Academie were elected, with Julia Gurol-Haller as the new Speaker for 2024/25. Ten new members also joined the Junge Akademie in June, for their 5-year membership term. Moreover, and nicely illustrating the increasing collaborations between the young and established science academies in Europe, two members of the Junge Akademie were re-elected as a tandem to the ALLEA Board at the ALLEA General Assembly in May 2024.
GYA 2024 AGM and International Conference
Over 145 members, alumni and external partners of the GYA participated in various sessions of the week-long 2024 GYA AGM and International Conference of Young Scientists, joined by over 60 members and alumni of the U.S. National Academies’ New Voices in Science,Engineering, and Medicine program, as well as locally-based Mirzayan Fellows, hosted at the U.S. National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine.
Early- and mid-career researchers led lively discussions around the Conference topic “Transformative and Inclusive Science for a Sustainable Future”, and engaged in cross-disciplinary and international exchange during panels, workshops and networking events.

Book launch – “COVID-19 Pandemic Up Close”
Providing personal and professional insights into young researchers’ experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, the narrative book “COVID-19 Pandemic Up Close” was launched at the GYA’s 2024 Annual General Meeting in Washington D.C. and at the 2024 European Network of Young Academies meeting (ENYA) in Berlin, Germany.

Women in Science for Peace workshop
One of seven AGM workshops this year was the “Women in Science for Peace” workshop, part of a series led by the GYA Women in Science working group.
The workshop was funded by a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation. With this grant, the GYA was able to offer financial support for the first time to mothers with small children to attend the event with their child and a supporting caretaker.
