GYA signs Stockholm Charter for Academic Freedom
Along with 18 other Young Academies and similar initiatives, the GYA is pleased to share the launch of The Stockholm Charter for Academic Freedom. This document serves as a reminder and a guide for protecting the rights of academics and researchers worldwide, and represents a step towards ensuring that academic freedom remains respected and maintained.

Nominations open for André Mischke Prize
The Young Academy of Europe (YAE) is currently seeking nominations for the “André Mischke Young Academy of Europe Prize for Science and Policy”. This prize is awarded annually to early to mid-career researchers with excellent, and internationally recognized scientific and science policy-related activities. More information on eligibility, general award criteria and the nominations process is available here.

2024 European Young Academies Meeting
The European Young Academies Meeting will take place in conjunction with the ALLEA General Assembly 21-23 May 2024 in Berlin, Germany, and will be co-organised by the German Young Academy – Die Junge Akademie and the GYA. The meeting will see discussions on “Young Academy Collaboration in a dynamic geopolitical landscape”, the YASAS General Assembly Meeting, joint workshops with ALLEA representatives and members from the young academies, as well as SAPEA science advice workshops.
GYA Co-Chair attends Thai Young Science Academy SLP
During a recent trip to Thailand, GYA Co-Chair Felix Moronta (ICGEB, Italy) attended a Science Leadership Programme organised by the Thai Young Scientists Academy in Bangkok, and also delivered a talk at Kasetsart University International College (KUIC) about his work in the ICGEB on environmental biosafety and emerging agricultural biotechnologies.

New members for the National Young Academy of Nepal
In December 2023, the National Young Academy of Nepal (NaYAN) convened its Annual General Meeting in Kathmandu, Nepal, where it welcomed 10 new members and further bolstered its commitment to fostering excellence in science and innovation in the country.
NaYAN members also elected a new Executive Committee, with Mohan Bahadur Chand and Nirina Khadgi leading the young academy as Co-Chairs for the next year.
Transforming STEM in Latin America and the Caribbean
Episode 7 of “Voices of Young Scientists” features a discussion with GYA member and Science Leadership Program-Latin America and the Caribbean (SLP-LAC) Project Lead Paulina Carmona-Mora (University of California Davis – United States) and SLP LAC fellow from Ecuador, Xavier Chiriboga. Xavier shares a proposal of one of the policy briefs that make up the Declaration of Leticia on “Transforming the STEM future: Visibilizing the social responsibility of young academics in Latin American and Caribbean”.

Young Academy of Argentina concerned over current state of Argentinian science system
The Young Academy of Argentina has published a statement on the future of science in the country. In it, they express deep concern about the present and future of the scientific sector in Argentina. The statement aims to highlight key aspects that jeopardize the scientific and technological system and calls for reflection on the importance of framing science and technology as a state policy, sustained over time and transcending any government or political affiliation. The authors believe that this is the only way to achieve a fair and sustainable development of Argentina. The scientific community is invited to share the statement, or support it by adding individual or organisational signatures to the text.
Engaging young and early-career scientists in the science-policy interface
The GYA Science Advice working group and Executive Committee joined forces with the International Science Council on the Declaration on Future Generations for the United Nations, calling for a stronger multilateral science-policy interface that meaningfully engages early-career scientists. ISC newsletter for early-career researchers
Following the invitation to young academies to become members of the ISC in 2023, the ISC closed 2023 by publishing its first edition of a dedicated early- to mid-career researchers newsletter.
The newsletter is intended to serve as a communication and engagement tool between the ISC and its Young Academies and Young Associations members.
