Several GYA members and alumni participated in the International Network for Governmental Science Advice (INGSA) Conference 2024, which took place for the first time in the Global South and was held at the Convention Center in Kigali, Rwanda, from 1-3 May 2024.
GYA Scientific Excellence working group co-lead Encieh Erfani (Mainz University, Germany) and group member Edmond Sanganyado (Northumbria University, United Kingdom) co-organised a session with the Comité Intersectoriel Étudiant (CIE) titled “Towards a Global Definition of Excellence in Research” on 1 May, which aimed to explore good practices implemented by funding, research, and policy institutions to reward policy engagement and redefine research excellence. Further participation included GYA alumna and past Co-Chair Connie Nshemereirwe (Actualize Africa, Uganda) and GYA member Justine Nzweundji-Khumbah (Institute of Medical Research and Medicinal Plants Studies/Ministry of Scientific Research and Innovation, Cameroon), who were panelists for the plenary session “Expanded Evidence: New Wisdom for Complex Problems“.
GYA alumna Shaheen Motala Timol (Head of Academic and Quality Enhancement, Middlesex University Mauritius), who was elected Chair of the INGSA Africa Chapter for the upcoming year, was a panelist on the closing plenary panel session “Inclusive Policies for Diverse Contexts”. Shaheen also participated on the panel “Advances in Capability Development for Science Advice – Frameworks and Tools“, along with GYA member and member of the INGSA Latin-American chapter Steering Committee Alma Cristal Hernández-Mondragón, and GYA alumnus and INGSA Vice President Binyam Sisay Mendisu (UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa).
At the INGSA 2024 conference, INGSA Africa launched its call for mentors and mentees for the 3rd intake of Science Advice Skills Development Program.
