Biography
Professor and Technology Researcher at the Brazilian Center for Physics Research (CBPF), where he leads the Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence Applied to Physics (LAB-IA). His current work is focused on pushing the frontiers of AI in physics applications, including the inverse modelling with Neural Posterior Estimation, Physics-Informed Neural Networks and Agentic AI for physics in multiple fields including Astrophysics and Geophysics.
Using AI-based catalogs he obtained the first and most constraining Hubble constant measurement from Dark Sirens at the time (2024) during the fourth observational season of gravitational-wave detectors. He were co-authors of the discovery of neutron star merger candidate GRB 230307. He is spokesperson of the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) and Principal Investigator of the S-PLUS Transient Extension Program (STEP) and its gravitational-wave branch (STEP-GW) and serves as PI in multiple fast transient projects. He received multiple recognitions including the Jacob Pallis Award from the Fulbright Commission and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (2025), Researcher Prize from the Brazil Conference at Harvard and MIT (2024) and as an Affiliated Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (2024). He coordinates the TVS Vera Rubin Observatory Taskforce on Large Language Models and Foundational Models, as well as the VeraRubin Strong Lensing Science Collaboration Data Challenge (2024–2025). His pioneering contributions to artificial intelligence in astrophysics include the early application of neural networks (2012) to strong gravitational lensing and the development of the AI-based winning solution for the II worldwide data competition to find Strong Gravitational Lensing (2020).
