Biography

Dr. Msigwa is a lecturer and researcher specializing in hydrology and water resources engineering at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST). She completed her post-doctoral fellowship with the University of Pretoria, supported by the Carnegie Corporation in New York. During her post-doc tenure, she led a collaborative team developing a Machine Learning-Based Early Warning System for Droughts in the Pangani Basin, East Africa.

With expertise in agricultural water management, Dr Msigwa works closely with rural farmers to assess water use and implement best management practices. She collaborates with local government and experts from various disciplines, including computer scientists, agronomists, and engineers, to devise climate change adaptation strategies for water management to enhance productivity.

Dr. Msigwa is a 2020 One Planet laureate by the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD). She has been recognized for her significant contributions and was awarded the early career OWSD fellowship in 2022 to expand her current research project on implementing a mobile application for an Early Warning System for Droughts in the Pangani Basin, East Africa. She holds several memberships in both national and international organizations. For instance, she is a member of the African Studies Association hosted in the USA. US-Africa Frontiers fellow, and International Water Association. She obtained a PhD in Engineering Sciences from Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
