Biography

Andrey L. Konevega is the Head of Molecular and Radiation Biophysics Division of B.P. Konstantinov Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute, National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute” in Gatchina, Russia. He is also the Head of Protein Biosynthesis Laboratory at PNPI and Senior Researcher at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, leading the research of molecular mechanism of protein biosynthesis.
Andrey got his Ph.D. in biophysics at St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University in 2005. In 2005-2009 he worked at the University of Witten/Herdecke in Witten (Germany) as postdoctoral researcher in laboratory of Prof. Marina V. Rodnina, studying the mechanism of decoding and translocation on bacterial ribosomes. In 2009-2013 Andrey worked as Research Scientist at Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry (Karl Friedrich Bonhoeffer Institute) in Göttingen, Germany.
Research in Andrey Konevega’s lab is focused on studying the molecular mechanism of protein biosynthesis and on molecular mechanism of action of antibiotics inhibiting partial reactions on prokaryotic ribosomes. For this purpose, various modern methods of molecular biology, biochemistry, fluorescent spectroscopy, pre-steady state kinetics and synthetic biology are combined to fulfil quantitative mechanistic studies of various aspects of protein biosynthesis machinery.
Andrey is a member of Russian scientific community, actively involved in creating modern academic system, establishing connections with leading research centres of Russia and other countries, involving students into the international scientific community. Andrey is organizing the PNPI Winter Schools on Molecular Biology and Biophysics, which take place in St. Petersburg suburb at the end of February. He is also a member of RNA Society and reviewer of Russian Science Foundation.
