The GYA’s At-Risk Scholars Initiative, in cooperation with the Young Academy of Scotland, the Council for At-Risk Academics (Cara), and the UK Young Academy, held the fifth professional development workshop for at-risk scholars in September at Wolfson College, University of Oxford. The annual workshop is made possible by a grant to Wolfson College, and by the contributions of all partner organizations.
The objectives of the 2-day in-person workshop are to help prepare participants to meet the expectations of academic life in the UK, to expose participants to ways to find professional opportunities inside and outside of academia, and to build a network to support participants’ professional development beyond the workshop.
Sessions addressed CV and cover-letter writing, interview and networking skills, the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF), grant applications and publishing, and opportunities outside of academia. In between sessions, participants had the opportunity to build an interdisciplinary peer network with one another.
