At IPBES 10 in 2023, the IPBES Plenary approved a methodological assessment on biodiversity-inclusive spatial planning and ecological connectivity. This assessment will focus on land, inland waters, and sea use, addressing how to mitigate biodiversity loss and improve conservation, restoration, and sustainable use. It supports the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The assessment will provide guidance on integrating biodiversity into spatial planning, with attention to ecological connectivity, participatory approaches, and regional needs, especially for developing countries.
