Open Science Lecture in December

The Open Science working group continues to host Open Science First Fridays, a series of discussions presented by GYA members and Open Science experts on topics ranging from biodiversity to scientific publishing and how they relate to Open Science.
The next discussion on 1 December 2023 is “Multilingual Open Access Publishing?” The discussion features Kelly Woods of F1000 publishing. – Complete information, upcoming events and registration available here.

Webinar on Climate Change Policies at COP28

The GYA working group on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction is organizing an online session on “Navigating Climate Change Policies: A Non-Specialist Toolkit” prior to this year’s COP28 event on 6 December 2023, at 14:00 UTC. New Young Academy in the Americas

Welcome to the Mexican Young Academy (AJMx) as one of only a few young academies and similar organisations in the Americas! The Mexican Young Academy launched in October 2023,and represents an ambitious project aimed at promoting scientific excellence and social commitment among the young scientists in the country. GYA members Alma Cristal Hernández Mondragón (Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute, Mexico) and Carlo Altamirano-Allende (Mexico) were actively involved as members of the founding group. – To learn more about the Mexican Young Academy, visit their website or follow them on Twitter/X.

GYA participation in high-level “Science for Policy in Europe” Conference in Brussels

EC member Markus J. Prutsch (European Parliament, Belgium), who is a former Co-Chair of the GYA Science Advice working group and is a member of the Young Academies Science Advice Structure in Europe (YASAS) Board, represented the GYA and YASAS at the High-Level “Science for Policy in Europe” conference, organized by the European Commission and the body for Science Advice for Policy by European Academies (SAPEA), which is part of the European Commission’s Scientific Advice Mechanism. – Learn more about the GYA and YASAS here.

YAE Annual General Assembly

In October2023, the Young Academy of Europe (YAE) convened in Munich, Germany, for their 2023 Annual General Assembly. Katalin Solymosi (Hungary) was elected as the new Chair of the new YAE Board, on which GYA member David Fernandez Rivas (University of Twente, Netherlands) serves as Communications Chair.

Young Academy Austria celebrates 15th anniversary

The Young Academy Austria celebrated its 15th anniversary in September 2023. At the event in Vienna, the past, present and future of the young academy were discussed and an alumni group was set up. While the Young Academy had faced some challenges in its early years, by now the young academy has created a space for itself and its members within the Austrian science system and has developed into one of the three pillars of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Young Academy of Japan publishes recommendations for the science system

The Young Academy of Japan published a report on “Remodelling Science and Society for the Next 20 Years: Ten Recommendations from the Young Academy of Japan”, which is based on a survey of voices from young scientists from Japan and offers a comprehensive analysis of the challenges faced by young scientists. From this rich discourse, the Young Academy of Japan distilled 10 paramount issues and subsequently formulated 10 recommendations to guide government and industry. Young Academy Japan releases Fukuoka Declaration comic

In connection with the GYA’s Annual General Meeting and International Conference of Young Scientists 2022, held online and in Fukuoka, Japan, and the resulting Fukuoka Declaration (read the article here), the Young Academy Japan has released a comic, set in the future, that portrays the future that the Fukuoka Declaration aims to achieve. – Check out the comic here.

InterAcademy Partnership webinar on promoting research ethics

In October 2023, the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) together with the Royal Irish Academy, organised a webinar on “Promoting Ethics and Integrity in Scientific Research and Practice”, which was designed to help researchers and scientists to delve into the importance of ethics in scientific endeavours and explore strategies to maintain the highest standards of integrity. This was the first session in a new webinar series that IAP will organise. – You can watch the webinar recording here.

Addressing the challenges of young scientists in Asia and the Pacific

Over 50 scientists under the age of 45 gathered at the Young Academies and Associations Round table event, organized by the International Science Council (ISC) on the margins of its Global Knowledge Dialogue in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. – Read more here.
