GYA Executive Committee member Mohamed Elhadidy (Zewail City of Science and Technology, Egypt), along with GYA member Maha Nasr (Faculty of Pharmacy, Ain Shams University, Egypt) and GYA alumni Adewale Adewuyi (Department of Chemical Sciences, Redeemer’s University, Nigeria) were part of a 4 July 2020 panel discussion entitled “The role of academies in career development and capacity building of young scholars” at the Phi’s Science Institute Research and Innovation Summit 2020, which was attended by more than 2,500 students and young researchers from all over the world.
Early-career researchers and scholars play a major role in shaping our societies, and several national and international academies play an important role in supporting these researchers on a national and a global scale, respectively. In particular, young academies have served as the voice of young scientists, providing mentoring opportunities and enabling early-career scholars to progress in their professional careers. This panel discussed how the GYA and The Arab German Young Academy for Sciences and Humanities (AGYA), as well as the National Egyptian Young Academy (EYAS) provide an interdisciplinary environment that fosters academic excellence and societal engagement.
In addition, the initiative of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) to support young scholars’ professional growth pathways through the affiliates programme was highlighted. The panel was moderated by Maha Nasr, while the role of GYA in empowering early- to mid-career researchers worldwide through connecting and training and providing visibility and opportunities for young scientists worldwide was presented by GYA member Mohamed Elhadidy.
