Biography
Dr. Aftab completed BSc (Hons) in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics from Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, University of the Punjab, Pakistan with distinction (Gold Medalist). During BSc (hons) he worked on cloning, expression and purification of preS region of HBV in E.coli. In 2006 he joined School of Biological Sciences (SBS), University of the Punjab for PhD and established Cell Biology lab at SBS. His initial work was on effect of environmental toxicants on growth and morphology of animal cells.
In 2008 he got the opportunity to work in USA at Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences, CA. He worked on yeast expression system to express therapeutic protein with Prof. James Cregg and on two stem cells related projects with Prof. Ian Phillips. In 2009 he received best young investigator award on his work on cardiac stem cells differentiation by Pakistan cardiac society. So far Dr. Aftab has joined more than 100 national and international conferences, workshops and symposium.
Dr. Aftab joined Sciforum Pakistan in 2004. Sciforum Pakistan is Pakistan’s first internet based discussion forum on life sciences. He served as President Sciforum for 4 years (2006-2010). Realizing the fact that there should be a forum for all Pakistani young researchers he laid the foundation of National Academy of Young Scientists (NAYS) with the help of other colleagues. The basic purpose of NAYS is to promote Science and Technology in Pakistan through collaborative effort of young researchers working in Pakistan and overseas. Currently Dr. Aftab is serving as President of National Academy of Young Scientists. In addition, he is also Director Innovators Club, Pakistan and National Director of Global Union of Scientists for Peace.
Dr. Aftab has over 60 research publications and has written 5 books for general public awareness.
