Biography

Shadi Albarqouni is a Palestinian-German Professor of Computational Medical Imaging Research at the University of Bonn and an AI Young Investigator Group Leader at Helmholtz AI. He has served as a Steering Committee member at the Arab-German Young Academy (AGYA) from 2022 to 2023 and currently serves as a Steering Committee member at the Global Health Research Alliance (GLOHRA) for the 2024 to 2026 term.

Previously, Shadi worked as a Visiting Scientist at Imperial College London and ETH Zurich and as a Senior Research Scientist & Team Lead at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). He has authored over 120 publications, including a notable paper in Nature Machine Intelligence. His work has garnered over 12,000 citations, reflecting an h-index of around 38, and spans Medical Imaging Computing, Computer Vision, and Machine Learning. His research has been published in prestigious journals and conferences such as MedIA, IEEE TMI, IEEE JBHI, IPMI, MICCAI, MIDL, ISBI, ICCV, ECCV, BMVC, NeurIPS, AAAI, and ICML.

Shadi has been actively serving the academic community in various roles, including reviewer, session chair, area chair, program committee member, organizing committee member, and Program Co-Chair at conferences like MICCAI, MIDL, and ISBI. He has also served as an Associate Editor for Special Issues at IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging and Medical Image Analysis and evaluated grants for organizations such as DFG, BMBF, DAAD, SNSF, and the European Commission.

In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Shadi has received several awards and fellowships throughout his academic career, including the DAAD PRIME Fellowship for International Mobility and the Helmholtz Young Investigator Group. He is a member of the European Lab for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) and co-founder of the Palestine Young Academy (PYA) and the RISE-MICCAI community, actively supporting and promoting scientists and researchers in Low-Middle Income Countries (LMICs).

His research interests include Interpretable Machine Learning, Robustness, Uncertainty Quantification, and Federated Learning. He is also passionate about Entrepreneurship and Startups for Innovative Medical Solutions, particularly knowledge transfer to developing and emerging countries.
