On 27 March during the Next Einstein Forum Global Gathering in Kigali Rwanda, Co-Chairs Moritz Riede (UK) and Tolu Oni (South Africa), together with Ghada Bassioni (Egypt) and Managing Director Beate Wagner had the opportunity to meet Vladimir Šucha, the Director-General of the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the European Commission’s science and knowledge service.
The GYA and JRC cooperate on a range of issues, and science advice is a recurring topic. In 2018, for example, the summer school titled ‘The role of population and migration for sustainable development in the European neighbourhood’ will take place 5 to 7 September 2018 in Laxenburg, Austria (internal link to the newsletter article).
With a focus on Africa, Šucha reported on the JRC’s goal to support the creation of a layer of scientists that can talk to/with policy makers by creating virtual centres across Africa. The JRC is also exploring the possibility of hosting 100-150 full PhDs from the African continent in a potential joint program with partners.
