In July 2025, Nature published a Correspondence on “Support Sudan’s displaced young scientists” by one of the co-founder of the Sudanese Academy of Young Scientists, Hisham Hassan. This short piece reflects on the devastating impact of the ongoing war in Sudan on the country’s scientific and academic landscape, including the country’s Young Academy – which, when it was established in 2007, was the first young academy in a developing country and the third in the world, following the Netherlands and Germany. The author calls on the world’s young academies to raise our collective voice to support young scientists who have been displaced and to advocate for scientists affected by conflict, not only in Sudan but across other regions facing similar crises.

Sri Lanka 2025 Three-Minute Thesis competition successfully launched

In May 2025, the Sri Lankan Academy of Young Scientists (SLAYS), in collaboration with the University of Queensland, Australia, successfully launched the 2025 edition of the Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) Competition at the gap HQ in Colombo – this will be followed by national finals. Now in its seventh consecutive year, the SLAYS 3MT® continues to evolve as a vibrant forum that strengthens research culture and fosters interdisciplinary dialogue among early-career researchers.
This competition takes science beyond labs and papers, making it accessible to all, one three-minute story at a time – thereby providing a powerful platform for Sri Lanka’s young researchers to shine.
This year’s competition attracted an impressive 85 applications from passionate MPhil and PhD candidates representing universities and research institutions across the country. Following a rigorous eligibility screening, 50 candidates were shortlisted, with 46 participants ultimately taking the stage in the opening round.

Presentations spanned a wide array of disciplines, including Natural Sciences, Engineering, Medical and Health Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, and Social Sciences, highlighting the rich and diverse research landscape of Sri Lanka.
A distinguished panel of ten expert judges evaluated each presentation based on comprehension, engagement, and effective communication of research significance.
