Biography

Justin Hanes is Professor of Ophthalmology (Primary), Biomedical Engineering, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, Environmental Health Sciences, Neurosurgery and Oncology, all at the Johns Hopkins University. He is the Director of the Center for Nanomedicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He also serves on the Executive Committee and as Director of Therapeutics for the Institute for NanoBioTechnology at Johns Hopkins, and as Director of Nanotechnology for the Cystic Fibrosis Research Center at Johns Hopkins. He is co-founder and a director of Kala Pharmaceuticals, where he also serves as the Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board. His research interests are at the intersection of biomaterials, nanotechnology, and medicine. In particular, his group focuses on the design of drug and nucleic acid loaded nanoparticle systems designed to deliver their therapeutic payload to specific sites in the body, including the eyes, lungs, cervicovaginal tract, and brain. Specific diseases of interest include age-related macular degeneration, cancer, inflammation, and cystic fibrosis.
