Biography
My career has been shaped by a deep commitment to ensuring that scientific discovery translates into tangible benefits particularly for people in low resource settings. From my early training as a medical scientist, I was drawn to the transformative impact that accurate diagnostics can have on patient outcomes. This interest deepened during my doctoral research on Clostridioides difficile pathogenesis, where I developed expertise in molecular microbiology and diagnostics, skills I have since applied to translational research on central nervous system and bloodstream infections. Having lived and worked across several African countries, I have gained first-hand insight into the realities of low-resource health systems, where limited access to diagnostics can determine survival. I was particularly struck by how anaerobic bacteria, despite their major role in wound and surgical infections, remain overlooked due to the lack of specialised facilities. Supported by a Wellcome Early Career Award, I am driven to advance diagnostic innovation, strengthen local capacity, and help make equitable diagnostics the norm rather than the exception.
