Biography

Dr. Erick Komolo is a practising lawyer and academic/researcher based out of Nairobi, Kenya, and Listed Counsel of the African Court of Human & Peoples’ Rights. He serves as the official Ombudsman for Amnesty International, Kenya. He is a Member of Tax Appeals Tribunal, where he adjudicates cases on tax law and administration; and Chairs TAT Committee on Trainings, Capacity Building & Resource Mobilisation & Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law, Egerton University. He also serves as Visiting Lecturer at Strathmore Law School, where he designed and taught the first LL.M Unit on Public Private Partnerships (in Africa) (PPP) in Kenya. He also supervised over 15 LL.M theses in the areas of human rights, constitutional law, PPP, Fisheries Law, Environmental Law, Law of the Sea, International Trade Law, and Natural Resources amongst other fields. He is the immediate former Principal Lecturer at the Kenya School of Law, where he designed and taught CPD courses on PPP, Intellectual Property; Human Rights, Public Policy and Legislative Drafting, Dispute Resolution, Devolution and Public Finance amongst others.  He majors in human rights, Public International Law; Tax Law; Law of Natural Resources Law; Fisheries Law; Law of the Sea; Public Private Partnerships; International Trade Law/Regional Integration; Employment/Labour Law; Human Rights Law; Constitutional Law; Corporate Governance; Policy Development/Legislative Drafting; Environmental Law; Public Policy; ADR; & Political Economy amongst areas. He has extensively advised and represented individual/corporate/private/non-profit clients in courts of all jurisdictions in Kenya. He served as the Editor-in-Chief, African Journal of Comparative Constitutional Law (AJCCL) (2020-22) and Legal Representative for Mercedes-Benz Group AG in Kenya for IPRs enforcement.

Academically, Dr. Komolo is Africa Science Leadership Fellow, University of Pretoria, South Africa. He has also been a Visiting Fellow, Faculty of Law, KU Leuven, Belgium (2020/21); Resident Fellow, Harvard Law School, USA (2018/19); Doctoral Fellow, World Trade Organisation, Geneva, Switzerland (2014); Swire Scholar, University of Hong Kong, China, (2011-15); and Commonwealth Scholar, University of Kent, UK (2009/10). During 2015/16, Dr. Komolo served as Mercury Policy & Regulatory Framework Adviser to the Government of Guyana, in the Caribbean, seconded by UNDP. He is an Examiner (Commercial Transactions) for Council of Legal Education.

In terms of leadership, initiative and community service, Dr. Komolo is the immediate former President, Commonwealth Scholars Association of Kenya (CSAAK). He is the Founder & Board Chairperson of MAKLWETA, a charity focused on supporting education of girls in rural Africa, with special focus on his native Homa Bay County, Kenya. Since 2012, MAKLWETA has fully sponsored education of over 230 girls, 55 of whom have transitioned to university including studying various STEM courses. To diversify MAKLWETA’s revenue streams, he founded DALA Tours, Safaris & Volunteers, a social enterprise in the tours & volunteerism space. DALA has hosted over 1100 international volunteers/tourists in Kenya, Uganda & Rwanda since 2015, undertaking diverse sustainable and affordable community service initiatives. At corporate level, Dr. Komolo has served on the boards of Fairtrade Africa (FTA) representing labour and human rights category, where he chaired the Audit & Risk Committee & Social Protection Committee. He served as Vice Chairperson (2020/21) and acting FTA Board Chairperson (2021), successfully managing executive leadership transitions.  He previously served on the board of BRIDGING Gaps, a Hong Kong interfaith foundation. He was also the global Adviser of Sourcy Inc., a Singapore-based technology start-up that focuses on disrupting Sino-Africa supply chain.

He is a regular commissioned professional media panellist/contributor across diverse law and public policy topics in Kenya and the EAC region; a pro bono lawyer for Kituo Cha Sheria; and Accredited Court-Annexed Mediator with the Judiciary; and former Chairperson, Moi University Students’ Union (Annex Campus).
