Biography

Daniel is a senior consultant at the Department of Anaesthesiology in Munich. His research interests are the vascular permeability barrier, focusing on the endothelial glycocalyx and its degradation and protection in sepsis, during major surgery and in the context of perioperative intravenous fluid therapy. Vascualr barrier functioning depends on an intact glycocalyx as the inwards directed oncotic pressure gradient is derived directly over this structure which covers the entire lumen of every blood vessel. A deterioration of the glycocalyx leads to capillary leckage, a loss of proteins and water out of the vasculature into tissue causing severe complications in critically ill patients.
