Biography
Alexandra Milanova has a BA in Southeast European Studies, an MA in International Relations and a PhD in Modern and Contemporary History from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. She completed her doctoral studies and defended her dissertation with summa cum laude in due time. She completed further studies in Greece, Turkey, France, Switzerland, Kenya and the United States. Currently, she holds the position of an Assistant Professor and Scientific Coordinator at the Institute of Balkan Studies and Centre of Thracology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Alexandra is a lecturer in a Balkan studies course taught for the first time for students at Osaka University in Japan. She also leads a course on cultural diplomacy in contemporary Europe at Sofia University. Before switching to academia, she was involved in international project and event management in the private sector.
For her outstanding achievements in the field of Humanities, Alexandra was awarded Professor Marin Drinov Award for Young Scientists as well as the Award named after acad. Azarya Polikarov on the 100th anniversary of his birth. She was also nominated for the National Pythagoras Award for Young Scientists in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities. She was also selected among other outstanding young people to participate in the Young Leaders Program and the 21st Annual Meeting of the Science and Technology in Society forum in Kyoto, Japan in October 2024.
Alexandra authored two monographs, three edited volumes and more than 40 other scholarly publications (articles, studies and reviews). She successfully launched several international projects whose coordinator she is. She is actively involved in science communication and cultural diplomacy activities.
Alexandra is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society (UK), a councillor of EUROPEANA Network Association, as well as a member of the Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities (DARIAH-EU) and the Global Yong Academy (GYA).
