<MEMBER TITLE AND NAME> from <MEMBER ORGANISATION> is a valued new member of the Global Young Academy (GYA), a prestigious international academy of early- and mid-career researchers. As each member is only appointed for a 5-year term, and there are only 30-40 new members in any given year (selected from ~400 applications world-wide), it is crucial that each member is supported to make the most of the unique opportunities of being involved in the GYA.

We want to thank you for your support of <MEMBER TITLE AND NAME> and the GYA through enabling <MEMBER TITLE AND NAME>’s attendance at the recent International Conference of Young Scientists and Annual General Meeting, held in Halle (Saale), Germany. This annual event is a critical part of member engagement in the GYA. This year was our 10^th Anniversary, hosted by the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. The AGM alternates between low-/middle-income countries and high-income countries, raising the profile of science in a different host nation every year.

As a member of the GYA, <MEMBER TITLE AND NAME> has the opportunity to engage in new research collaborations, further develop leadership and communication skills, learn about diverse cultures, connect with strategic partners from science and policy, and contribute to the work of the GYA. At this recent meeting, we met with the President and the Secretary General of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, senior Members of the German Parliament, members of the Governing Board of the International Science Council, the Director General and also the Head of the Science Advice to Policy unit at the EU Commission Joint Research Centre, President of the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), the President of the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities (ALLEA), as well as other dignitaries and GYA members from all over the world (many of whom are in senior positions). <MEMBER TITLE AND NAME> also worked on ongoing and new projects within working groups, participated in research talk sessions and panels, and contributed to interactive discussions, leading to a highly productive and inspiring meeting.

By enabling <MEMBER TITLE AND NAME> to engage with the GYA, your organisation has demonstrated support for developing the leadership of early- and mid-stage researchers, and provides recognition of the important role they can play in society and policy globally. <MEMBER TITLE AND NAME> is now in an excellent position to explore possible synergies between your organisation’s strategic goals and those of the GYA.

Our members are typically 3 to 10 years post-PhD and below the age of 40 at selection, which is based on (i) demonstrated excellence in the field of research, and (ii) demonstrated commitment to improving the state of science and its links to broader society. As each member is only appointed for a 5-year term, and there are only 30-40 new members in any given year (selected from ~400 applicants world-wide), it is crucial that each member is supported to make the most of the unique opportunities of being involved in the GYA.

Our members share research excellence and a passion about the role of science in creating a better world. The GYA has an international profile as “giving a voice to young scientists”. Involvement in our activities spans innovative interdisciplinary research through to influencing science policy and high-level science advice. Our focus on science and policy, on education and outreach, and on strengthening international networks of researchers has resulted in the GYA recently becoming a full member of the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), which is the overarching body of more than 140 national and regional science academies. With its worldwide network and highly trained membership, the GYA has been called “the best bet on the global scientific leadership over the next 10 years”.

We want to thank you for your support of <MEMBER TITLE AND NAME> and the GYA through enabling <MEMBER TITLE AND NAME>’s attendance at the recent International Conference of Young Scientists and Annual General Meeting, held in Halle (Saale), Germany.
