GYA member Encieh Erfani (Mainz University, Germany) participated in the 73rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting (Physics). The meeting brought together around 40 Nobel Laureates and 600 young scientists from all over the world, and included networking opportunities, lectures from Nobel laureates, panel discussions, science talks and inspiring conversations with laureates and other early-career researchers (ECRs). Encieh used the opportunity to network with scientists of different generations and in particular to raise awareness about the need to support scientists in conflict regions around the world.
Conflict escalation was also on the minds of participating Nobel laureates, who concluded the meeting by signing the “Mainau Declaration 2024 on Nuclear Weapons”, which urges the people and leaders of the world to recognize the dangers of the massive increase in nuclear weapons, and act to prevent worldwide catastrophe through use of these weapons.
