Providing personal and professional insights into young researchers’ experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, the narrative book “COVID-19 Pandemic Up Close” was launched in May at the GYA’s 2024 Annual General Meeting in Washington D.C. and at the 2024 European Network of Young Academies meeting (ENYA) in Berlin, Germany.
The book aims to convey the human dimension of the pandemic, focusing on the experiences of young researchers from around the globe. Individual narratives are categorized by patterns identified in workshops leading up to the book publication. Infographics in the book illustrate some emerging patterns, such as challenges faced and strategies to cope with these.

This book demonstrates the power of words and narratives to understand and overcome adverse situations. By documenting the lived experiences and learnings of young researchers during the COVID-19 pandemic, the book also aims to provide a message to future generations.
The book’s publication was the culmination of a collaboration between GYA members on the project “Young Researchers and the COVID-19 Pandemic“, for which Paulina Carmona-Mora (University of California-Davis, USA), Bernardo Urbani (Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research), Sandra López Vergès (Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies, Panama) and Iwona Janicka (Aarhus University, Denmark) were awarded the GYA’s 2021/22 Sasha Kagansky Interdisciplinary Grant. Collaborator Delfina D’Alfonso also co-edited the book.
Paulina Carmona Mora presented the book to GYA members and alumni at the GYA’s 2024 Annual General Meeting, and Bernardo Urbani presented the publication to a European young scientists audience at the 2024 ENYA meeting.
