As a molecular biologist, I have a deep interest in understanding how life works at the cellular and molecular levels. I have worked in research projects in the fields of microbiome, cancer, synthetic biology and recoding. I am also interested in translating research outputs into products that provide solutions to the needs of our societies and populations. I have done this by engaging in entrepreneurial projects aiming at providing better medical care and accessible diagnostics. I am also committed to promoting research and science education, particularly among people with less opportunities and access to resources, such as in developing countries.
My interest in science came through my love of nature. As a Honduran, I feel lucky to have been exposed to such an amazing ecological diversity. Since I was a child, I was very curious about all kinds of animals, especially frogs and turtles. I developed a deep sense of respect and awe towards nature. It was obvious to me that I wanted to dedicate my life to understanding life and the amazing creatures that inspired my curiosity.
I was raised with the conviction that I could achieve anything I aimed for, regardless of my gender. I was lucky to have female leadership models in my family and that at home boys and girls would play the same games, have the same responsibilities, opportunities and freedom of choice on life and career paths. This was a determinant in the pursuit of my career as it enabled me to challenge the strong stereotypes imposed on women in Honduras and the lack of research path opportunities in my home country. Based on my experience, I believe that to bring more women into science, we need female role models inspiring girls to follow their dreams. We also need homes and institutions providing freedom of choice and guaranteeing equal opportunities, rights and responsibilities.
I encourage all girls to follow their curiosity, pursue their dreams and dare to do what they love. We can achieve all that we set your minds to. The road might not be easy sometimes, but it is truly rewarding and fulfilling. Challenge any belief or action that tries to fit you into something you are not! Finally, have faith in the future, we are continuously progressing towards less biased societies. The future looks bright.
I am still as determined as I was as a little girl (see picture above) and I still stain all my shirts with food…
