The next General Assembly of the Global Young Academy will be held in South Africa between 20-24 May 2012.
Save the date and come and join us for this important and exciting event! The meeting will be organized in collaboration with the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS) and the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf).
Delegates will arrive on the campus of the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) on Sunday 20 May. Accommodation will be at the Illovo lodge on the campus and the bulk of the meetings will also take place on the GIBS campus itself.
On Monday afternoon and evening, delegates will be transported to the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI) on the main campus of the University of Pretoria for meetings with representatives of science bodies, students and researchers from various institutes in South Africa. This will be followed by a function and fun team building activities with an African character!
On Tuesday, after the morning meetings at GIBS, delegates will be transported to the Maropeng centre at the ‘Cradle of Humankind’, a famous archeological site where some of the best known human and humanoid fossils have been unearthed (see for example a recent issue of Science covering finds in the area). Here we will tour the facilities and caves where the fossils are found, and meet with members of the South African Young Academy of Science. We will then have a traditional ‘braai’ function with SAYAS members there in the evening.
The meetings will conclude on Wednesday at GIBS, followed by a farewell dinner. Delegates will be motivated to link with various research institutions and science promotion bodies in the region to promote collaborative links and science development in general. Delegates will be assisted to apply for funding for this purpose. For more information please contact " target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dr Heidi Wedel. The conference is a closed meeting for GYA members and representatives of selected institutions cooperating with GYA.
