ISC–INGSA training programme on science advice to policy

The ISC–INGSA training programme on science advice to policy is now open for applications. Designed for ISC Member organizations and their communities, this programme strengthens participants’ ability to engage effectively at the science-policy interface.

The programme provides a comprehensive foundation for understanding and practicing science advice across national and global contexts. Developed with input from ISC Members and INGSA’s regional chapters, it will equip individual scientists and scientific institutions with the skills, insights, and frameworks needed to engage constructively with policy processes. Participants will work through a set of self-paced online modules introducing key concepts such as:

  • policy problem-framing, evidence synthesis, and knowledge brokering;
  • the practical realities of providing advice in high-stakes or uncertain environments;
  • communicating complexity, building trust, and navigating competing values.

In addition, the programme also includes a curated series of interactive webinars scheduled for 2026 featuring experienced practitioners and thinkers from across the ISC and INGSA networks. These sessions extend beyond the modules, offering space for critical reflection on issues such as the evolution of advisory systems, public trust in expertise, and the ethics of advisory work.

Who should participate

The programme has been designed with content to support a wide spectrum of ISC Members, including:

  • Early-career researchers seeking exposure to science advisory work and practical engagement skills.
  • Mid-career scientists hoping to increase the policy relevance of their research or engage more actively in national and global policy discussions.
  • Leaders of scientific institutions aiming to gain context on the skills, insights and frameworks needed to engage effectively and constructively at the science-policy interface.

Applications for the first cohort close on 14 December 2025.
