Elvan Ceyhan was born on 20 September 1974 in Turkey, where he had his undergraduate education with BS in Mathematics at Koç University (KU), Istanbul. Then he went to US in 1997, attended the PhD program in Mathematics at Oklahoma State University (OSU) for a year, and switched to the Statistics Department of OSU where he received an MS in 2000. He started the PhD program in Applied Mathematics and Statistics Department in the same year at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU), received an MSE in Mathematical Sciences in 2002, and received a PhD in Applied Mathematics and Statistics 2004. Then he was a post-doctoral fellow at Center for Imaging Science, JHU for a year. After his post-doc, he became an assistant professor at Department of Mathematics at KU, and in 2011, he has been promoted to associate professorship. In 2016, he went back to US and was a visiting associate professor at the Department of Statistics of University of Pittsburgh for a year. Then from 2017-2019, he served as the deputy director of SAMSI (Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute) which was one of the six NSF funded mathematical sciences institutes. During the same time, he was also a research associate professor at the Department of Statistics of North Carolina State University. Since 2019, he is an associate professor at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of Auburn University. His research interests are machine learning and data science (pattern recognition, classification and clustering); probabilistic investigation of random geometric graphs called Proximity Catch Digraphs (PCDs), their construction and characterization, domination, edge and arc density of PCDs); spatial data and pattern analysis (by nearest neighbor and graph theoretic methods) and their
applications; statistical methods for medical data and image analysis. He has (co)authored more than 50 journal articles, gave numerous invited talks and presentations. He was an associate editor for Computational Statistics and Data Analysis and Journal of Probability and Statistical Science between 2008-2016, and editorial board member of Model Assisted Statistics and Applications between 2007-2012. He has been chosen as an “elected member” of International Statistical Institute in 2011. Also, he also served as a member of BoD of International Association of Statistical Computing between 2012-2016 and was a “TWAS Young Affiliate Fellow” in between 2012-2016, and received the prestigious International Outgoing Fellowship grant from REA of European Union in 2012, and was a member of GYA between 2013-2018
